The ending is difficult. I think it may be a reference to death and the bed mentioned outside could be the earth, which is ‘quieter’ and ‘dustier’ as the earth is quiet and has been there a long time. They are in this bed as dead bodies in the grave, which is where they will sleep at the end of their lives. Their relationship is a little bit like this as they are dead and lifeless. This final bed lies under the sun and the rain.
