The third stanza opens with a list emphasising the unpleasantness of the house ‘nights of storm, days of mist, without end;’ He is not in a happy place. ‘sad days’ ‘old griefs and griefs not yet begun’ suggests he is wallowing in misery, thinking of grief, perhaps some lost family members and then thinking of losses to come.
