There is a dominance of great scents ‘the wild rose scents’ the presence of birds ‘woodbines’ and a sense of creation’s masterpiece where man has not been. ‘things seem the same in such retreats as when the world began’ he is imagining how this must be just like the world when man did not destroy anything.

He then details these elements over the next few stanzas with the ground described as ‘neglected’ ‘lawless bounds’ ‘crooked and rude’, making it sound lawless and totally uncontrolled, which may seem a bad thing to some, but not to Clare who describes them as ‘lovely spots’ (Stanza 11) where he can ‘leave life’s cares a while forgot’ so he can come here to these wild places to forget about life’s unpleasant aspects and simply enjoy nature.
