This shows Clare’s love of nature and how he feels he can closely relate to it. he tries to show the detail of nature to the reader perhaps to get them to feel the same love and intensity for it that he does.

The snail could almost reflect Clare as it has a timid nature and it creeps about, lacking confidence. Clare was a loner and expressed himself best through his writing.
