The hidden ‘landrail’ (a small, shy bird – see picture) is heard crying ‘craik craik’ but is hidden away ‘like voices underground’ and is happy to see evening come as it is cooler and it can then move about freely without as much fear of being caught. Again, this is a little like Clare who does not wish to spend time in the company of others and feels happier at dusk (when he is out walking alone).
