The examiner is looking for you to show that you understand the character of Atticus and his role as a single parent to Scout and Jem.

He is not simply a lawyer he is a family man and good citizen.

Plan

1 – Introduction

What are you going to do? You are going to explore the presentation fo Atticus as a good father in the novel.

2 – Atticus

Firstly consider Atticus’ role in the novel.

What is he like?

How does he behave?

What are his relationships like with others?

Focus on actions and words.

3 - Atticus as a father

You need to link this section to the previous section i.e. how does Atticus the man make Atticus the father.

You need to select specific examples of where Atticus is a good father in the novel.

Maybe this is when he is teaching the children, maybe it is when he is supporting Tom or maybe it is one of his many moral lessons he shares with the children.

You should also mention that Atticus leads by example constantly helping and supporting his children.

4 – Conclusion

Based on your analysis of the novel and Atticus character come to a firm conclusion
