Essay Plan

The examiner is looking for you to show that you understand the dramatic tension used and how and why it is used. The examiner also wants you to consider at least two events.

Plan

1 – Introduction

What are you going to do? You are going to consider how Harper Lee creates dramatic tension throughout the novel by exploring two specific scenes.

2 – Dramatic Tension

Select your two scenes or several scenes from across the novel.

Explain how dramatic tension is used in these scenes by looking at language, words, actions and descriptions.

3 - The effect of dramatic tension

Analyse the two scenes or several scenes by looking at what effect they have firstly on the characters and secondly on the novel as a whole. E.g. the court room scene creates dramatic tension and moves the novel forward.

4 – Conclusion

Come to a firm conclusion using your analysis of the dramatic tension sum up how and why dramatic tension is used in the novel.
