Essay Plan

The examiner is looking for you to show that you understand the character of Boo Radley and his role in the novel. The examiner also wants you to show how people react to Boo and how Boo is perceived by society.

Plan

1 – Introduction

What are you going to do? You are going to consider Boo Radley’s role in the novel. You are going to consider his purpose in the novel, how he treats others and how others treat him.

2 – Boo Radley

What is Boo like?

What characteristics does he show?

What do his actions and words tell us?

How is Boo described?

Remember to use quotations throughout.

3 - Boo Radley’s actions

Consider the actions of Boo.

 What does he do in the novel?

First he is perceived as an evil vision, something to be feared, but at the end he saves the children.

You should consider his actions in detail using quotations to support your points.

Select examples of the way people treat Boo and how Boo treats others.

4 – Your opinion

Try to answer the questions do you think he is in the novel to be feared or do you think he needs to be understood, or do you have a different opinion.

5 – Conclusion

Come to a firm conclusion using your analysis of his character explain what you think Boo’s role is in the novel.
