The examiner is looking for you to show that you understand which characters are lonely in the novel and why.

Plan

1 – Introduction

What are you going to do? You are going to argue either for or against this statement, i.e There are many characters who are lonely in Of Mice and Men……….

You may decide to find characters who are not lonely, but this is harder to do.

2 – Loneliness

Which characters are lonely?

Why are they lonely? What makes them lonely and what is Steinbeck trying to say by making these characters so lonely?

3 - George

The question asks you to look at George at the beginning of the novel. What makes him seem lonely here? Does this continue throughout the rest of the novel?

Who else is lonely?

How do they show the views of John Steinbeck?

4 – Racism

One of the key themes of the novel is racism, which can be related to loneliness. Who is the victim here? How lonely is he?

What is Steinbeck saying?

5 – Conclusion

Come to a firm conclusion do you or do you not agree with the statement?

To what extent do you or do you not agree?
