The fact that it is ‘magnificent’ shows that those who built him were really careful about their creation and put a lot of effort into it, only for it to be destroyed. The thief almost seems to admire and like the snowman, which is one of the few times affection is shown in the poem. In fact the person cares more for this inanimate object than for any living person.
