The poem begins with the use of personification, making the earth seem like a person’s skin. ‘the skin cracks like a pod.’ The image also works as a simile with the skin making a cracking sound, much like a pod does when it cracks open and reveals the seed within. It all shows how without water things break open and begin to die.
‘There is never enough water’ quickly establishes the difficult conditions in which they live.
