They are described as ugly and almost have a sense of real violence about them. One is described as having ‘a bashed-in head’ which makes it sound deformed and as if it has been in a fight. The head is also described a ‘a pebble on a stem rooted in a dump of gross feathers’ so it seems out of proportion and a pebble is hard and the feathers described as ‘gross’ makes them seem ugly.
