It is the way they eat their prey. Between lines 13 and 21 they are described eating: ‘picked the eyes of a swollen corpse’ ‘ate the things in its bowel’ ‘gorged’ ‘cold telescopic eyes’.
None of this description is pleasant and they are emotionless ‘cold’ but also have great skill as their eyes are like telescopes.
