This acts as a link to the final section which compares us to the vultures, but more of that later. The poet says it is strange that love can be found anywhere, with the vultures who are so vicious and ugly and in a ‘charnel-house’, which is place where human remains or skeletons are kept. Here it is the treetop where they stand watching the remains of the corpse they have just devoured.
