Answer

In stanza three this is explained ‘because he was my foe’. The words ‘just so’ emphasise that this is the only reason he can think of. He also repeats ‘because’ as if he is thinking aloud and is not very sure what the real reason was. It is almost as if he is being interviewed about the experience and is thinking in a conversational manner. He doesn’t sound as if he believes what he is saying. Maybe this is what he has been told by propaganda, but does not believe it.
