The poet’s partner is ‘shattered’ and they drive home to ‘numb ourselves with alcohol’ as if the experience has been so terrible that they have to try to make themselves feel better by getting drunk. Is this because they have seen all the old people and that horrifies them, because they feel guilty about leaving the old lady in this terrible place or because they are scared that they will end up like this one day?
