Definite and indefinite articles

In English the definite article is ‘the’ and is always the same. In German all nouns belong to one of three groups or genders: masculine, feminine or neuter.

Genders can be confusing, e.g. das Baby (i.e. neuter) even if the word refers to a baby girl or a baby boy, or die Person (feminine) even if it refers to a man. You will have to learn the genders of nouns very carefully as you must not write English words in your work.

The indefinite article is used in the same way as the definite article, but it means ‘a’. Again all nouns have their own indefinite articles and must be learned.

There is no plural for ‘a’.
