Modelling

Modelling is perhaps one of the oldest techniques used in art throughout history. Modelling involves the manipulation of plastic (that’s formable material and not necessarily ‘plastics’) material to a form that meets the artist’s desire.

The technique differs from carving somewhat; corrections can be made and the use of malleable materials makes for more ambitious creations. Common modelling materials include clay or wax and can also include the moulding of metals such as iron.

Peter Volkous was a contemporary expressionist sculptor who worked with ceramics, experimenting with abstract forms playing aggressively with their surfaces in an energetic way. Victor Spinski was famous for using ceramics to recreate non-ceramic objects using realism. Click here.

The art of modelling is incredibly broad, common in ancient, historical and modern periods across the world to achieve varying results. It’s a great addition for toying with for any theme, and experimenting with different materials to achieve alternative outcomes is a must. Making miniature models with inexpensive modelling clay or even children’s play dough as exmples of thought development in a portfolio are a must.
