Are Psychology's Theories and Hypotheses Sound?

Sound Theories are :

  • Easy to Understand
  • Formulated as Predictions
  • Useful

Arguments Against Psychological Theories being Sound

  • Some Psychology doesn’t predict anything. Psychoanalysis tends to explain an individual’s behaviour after an event which isn’t very useful in predicting behaviour. Humanistic Psychology does not try to have sound theories or hypotheses.
  • Humanistic Psychologists argue that each individual is unique and they would rarely try to predict human behaviour.

Arguments For Psychological Theories being Sound

  • Cognitive, Social and Physiological Psychology have sound theories that are easy to understand, constructed as predictions and have practical uses.
