Types of religious experiences (Swinburne – ‘The Existence of God’)

  • Public Ordinary – experiences where a person interprets nature/the world as having religious significance
  • Public Extraordinary – experiences that violate normal understandings of the workings of nature
  • Private describable – dreams
  • Private non-describable – the divine is revealed to others directly – beyond human powers
  • Non-specific – looking at the world from a religious perspective
