Double Circulation

Deoxygenated blood is pumped to the lungs and the oxygenated blood returns to the heart to be pumped to the body.

The advantage of this system is that the pressure of the blood stays quite high and so it can flow faster around the body.

Because of the double circulation the heart is really two pumps in one:

• The right side pumps the blood to the lungs.

• The left side pumps it to the rest of the body.
