Xylem vessels and phloem tubes are different in structure and do different jobs:
Xylem | Phloem |
Carries water and minerals from roots to the leaves |
Carries dissolved food substances both up and down the plant |
The movement of water up the plant and out of the leaves is called transpiration |
The movement of the dissolved food is called translocation
|
Made of vessels which are hollow tubes made of thickened dead cells |
Made of columns of living cells |
Remember phloem for food and xylem for water.
