Xylem vessels and phloem tubes are gathered together into collections called vascular bundles. They are found in different regions of the leaf, stem and root.

Xylem vessels and phloem tubes are different in structure and do different jobs:

Xylem Phloem

Carries water and minerals from roots

to the leaves

Carries dissolved food substances

both up and down the plant

The movement of water up the

plant and out of the leaves is called

transpiration

The movement of the dissolved food is

called translocation

Made of vessels which are hollow

tubes made of thickened dead cells

Made of columns of living cells

Remember phloem for food and xylem for water.
