Mr Jones
Jones is presented as an incompetent farmer just as Nicholas II was an incompetent Tsar.
Jones was too drunk to ensure all the animals were locked away which led them to congregate in the barn to plot his removal.
Old Major is the voice of criticism against Jones, highlighting Jones’s shortcomings and criticising his attitude towards the animals and the fact the animals are given only the bare minimum of food and as soon as they are deemed useless, they are killed.
The Tsar treated his people in much the same way as the Russian people lived in very poor economic and social conditions and during the First World War, inflation was rife and the people in the cities were starving. The Tsar brushed aside any complaints.
This can be compared with Jones as he would sit idle for days reading his paper and drinking. His fields were neglected and one summer day he went to the pub and did not return until the following day leaving the animals without food yet again.
Due to his mismanagement and neglect, Jones (like Tsar Nicholas) was deposed by the animals.
The removal of Jones by the animals can be compared to the Russian Revolution of 1917 when Tsar Nicholas was deposed by his own people.
Jones spent most of his time after the ‘Revolution’ in the pub, getting drunk and telling anyone who would listen the story of what happened to him.
It can be said that Jones and Tsar Nicholas II both ran their respective farm or country in much the same way. They were both lazy, corrupt and ruled with an iron fist.
Neither listened to advice or if they did, they did nothing about it.
