There is a feeling that you could not use both together, that only one can be used at any one time, even if you wanted to.

If you lived somewhere that wasn’t your home you would have to speak the ‘foreign tongue’ and the ‘mother tongue’ would rot, in other words you could not speak your own language as well anymore as you are not using it.
