It becomes clear that the ‘you’ in the poem in not the writer, but someone he meets in ‘sixteen years’, perhaps his partner, although this is left unclear. The writer is briefly referred to as ‘waiting by the phone’ but it does not ring as they have not yet met. He seems to want to be there for this person in their hour of need, but cannot help.
