The Role of the Church - Worldwide Church
This section explores the role of the worldwide Christian church. Throughout history, Christians have faced persecution for their beliefs, with many suffering imprisonment, torture, or even death because of their faith. Despite these challenges, Christian teachings emphasise the importance of trusting in God and forgiving those who persecute them, rather than holding onto hatred. This stance reflects the teachings of Jesus, who instructed His followers to love even their enemies.
Christians believe in justice and the equality of all people. They believe that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background, race, or beliefs. The Bible offers guidance on these values, encouraging followers to seek peace and reconciliation.
"Blessed are the Peacemakers."
— Matthew 5:9
In fact, many Christians, including Quakers, are pacifists and advocate for non-violence. The idea of reconciliation is crucial within Christianity, as followers are taught to forgive others and work towards peace. For instance, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a prominent figure in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, played a key role in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This committee was set up to help heal the wounds of a divided society by allowing victims and perpetrators of violence to come together, confess their actions, and seek forgiveness. This process was central to the peaceful transition of South Africa into a new, democratic era.
Reconciliation Example:
When Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa, Archbishop Tutu chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, aiming to heal the nation through the forgiveness of past wrongs. This effort is a significant example of how Christians seek reconciliation and healing in situations of division and conflict.
Christians are encouraged to follow the teachings found in the Parable of the Sheep and Goats (Matthew 25:31-46), which emphasises caring for the poor, the hungry, the sick, and the imprisoned, as these actions are seen as serving Christ himself. However, it is important that all these actions are done with love, as St Paul taught:
"If I give all that I possess to the poor, but do not have love, I gain nothing."
— 1 Corinthians 13:3
This underscores the idea that love is the driving force behind all acts of charity and service within Christianity.
Pax Christi: A Christian Peace Organisation
Pax Christi is an international organisation that works towards human rights and peace in conflict zones around the world. The organisation strongly believes that violence should be avoided and that true peace can only be achieved through dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation. Pax Christi advocates for peaceful solutions to conflicts and promotes justice, equality, and human dignity.
Christian Aid Organisations: Spreading Christian Values Globally
Numerous Christian organisations work globally to spread the message of love, compassion, and justice through charitable actions. These organisations aim to support vulnerable communities by providing both emergency relief and long-term development. Some of the most notable Christian charities involved in international aid include CAFOD, Tearfund, and Christian Aid, each of which has specific missions to alleviate poverty and support the most disadvantaged.
CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development)
CAFOD is a major Christian charity that works in partnership with local communities to fight poverty, promote justice, and address the consequences of natural disasters. The organisation operates in more than 50 countries, providing aid in the form of food, healthcare, and education.
For example, in Zambia, CAFOD has worked for decades, providing emergency food to those affected by droughts and training communities in sustainable farming practices. In Myanmar, CAFOD has helped provide assistance following tropical cyclones and continues to support the most vulnerable people through community development projects. CAFOD also works in Ethiopia, helping to improve farming conditions to combat malnutrition and providing animal feed to support herders.
Tearfund
Tearfund, an evangelical Christian charity, has been working in countries like Ethiopia and Zambia since the 1970s. In Ethiopia, Tearfund’s initial focus was on establishing self-help groups, which provide local communities with the resources to become self-sufficient. The charity also offers emergency aid during times of drought and famine.
Tearfund’s work extends beyond just physical needs; it also aims to address spiritual and emotional needs. In Myanmar, Tearfund has established healthcare training centres to train local individuals as community health workers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to combat disease and promote better healthcare in their communities. More than 480 people have been trained, which demonstrates the organisation’s long-term commitment to improving the well-being of local populations.
Christian Aid
Christian Aid has worked in Ethiopia for over 30 years, providing support for local communities and helping to build resilience against natural disasters like drought. The charity also focuses on improving access to healthcare and addressing other social issues, such as violence and inequality. In Myanmar, Christian Aid has worked to promote gender equality and advocate for the rights of vulnerable communities. It also aims to address issues of violence by supporting those affected by conflict and promoting peace-building efforts.
Through their charitable work, these organisations embody Christian teachings about love, justice, and compassion, ensuring that the message of Jesus Christ is lived out through actions that support both the physical and spiritual needs of individuals worldwide.
The worldwide Church plays a vital role in addressing global issues such as poverty, injustice, and violence. By following the teachings of Jesus Christ, Christians strive to create a world where peace, justice, and reconciliation are central values. Organisations like Pax Christi, CAFOD, Tearfund, and Christian Aid continue to spread the Christian message of love and compassion, providing essential support to those in need and working to transform the world in line with Christian teachings.
