Where the power input and output of a machine are known, it is not necessary to calculate the work input and output in order to calculate the efficiency. The input and output powers can be used directly. This gives the alternative relationship for efficiency:

efficiency = useful power output ÷ total power input

The output power of a device depends on both the input power and the efficiency.
