The most common way to make a sentence negative is by using ne … pas around the verb.

🔹 Example:

  • Positive: Je parle français. (I speak French.)
  • Negative: Je ne parle pas français. (I do not speak French.)

💡 Ne becomes n' before vowels:

  • Il n’aime pas le sport. (He does not like sport.)

Ne … plusNo longer / Not anymoreNous ne mangeons plus de viande. (We no longer eat meat.)

Word Order with Negation

  • In simple tenses (e.g. present, imperfect), ne … pas goes around the verb.
    • Tu ne comprends pas. (You do not understand.)
  • In compound tenses (e.g. perfect tense), ne … pas goes around the auxiliary verb (être or avoir).
