The Data Protection Act 1998 was designed to protect individuals’ personal data stored on computers. It ensures that data is processed fairly and lawfully, collected for specific purposes, kept accurate and up to date, not stored longer than necessary, and secured against unauthorised access. It also restricts data transfer outside the European Economic Area unless adequate protection is in place.

The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) regulates how public authorities can monitor communications. It allows law enforcement to intercept communications with proper authorisation, balancing national security needs with individuals’ privacy rights. 

Computers in the workforce increase efficiency, automate repetitive tasks, and enable remote working. However, they also pose risks such as job displacement, widening the digital divide, and the loss of traditional skills. 

Automated decision making improves speed and accuracy in processes such as financial systems and healthcare diagnostics. However, it raises ethical concerns including lack of transparency, potential bias, and reduced human accountability. 

Artificial intelligence offers opportunities such as improved problem-solving and productivity. However, risks include job losses, ethical concerns about decision-making autonomy, and potential misuse in areas such as surveillance or warfare. 

Digital technology can support sustainability through efficient systems and reduced resource use. However, it also contributes to environmental issues such as e-waste, high energy consumption in data centres, and the carbon footprint of manufacturing devices. 

Censorship can protect users from harmful or illegal content and enforce laws. However, it can also limit freedom of expression, enable government control, and suppress dissenting opinions. 

Monitoring behaviour using technologies such as CCTV or internet tracking can enhance security and prevent crime. However, it raises concerns about privacy invasion, mass surveillance, and misuse of collected data. 

Analysing personal information enables personalised services, targeted advertising, and improved healthcare. However, it poses risks such as data breaches, loss of privacy, and misuse of data for manipulation. 

Piracy involves illegally copying and distributing digital content, harming creators and businesses. Offensive communications include cyberbullying and harassment, often enabled by anonymity online, raising ethical and legal concerns. 

Cultural considerations affect design choices such as colour meanings, language support, and layout. Systems must accommodate different character sets and cultural norms to ensure accessibility and usability worldwide. 

The future use of AI and autonomous systems raises ethical concerns about accountability, safety, and decision-making. For example, autonomous vehicles must make decisions in critical situations, raising questions about responsibility. 

Bias in algorithms can arise from biased training data, leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes. This is particularly concerning in areas like hiring, law enforcement, and finance, where decisions significantly impact individuals’ lives.
